Keep Bears and Other Animals Out of Trash

As bears and other wildlife return to the City looking for food, the City would like to remind residents and commercial businesses to secure trash in a manner that prevents access by wildlife. Per City Code Chapter 12, residential trash and recycling collection containers may be placed out for collection no earlier than 6am on the morning of collection. Trash containers should be made of durable plastic or metal and must have lids that stay on if a container is turned on its side. It is not permissible to leave trash for collection unless it is enclosed in a container of this type. Recycling that is free of food residue may be left unenclosed for collection. Commercial dumpsters should have a locking device to prevent easy access for animals, and should be latched at all times when not being filled or emptied.

Failure to adhere to the trash collection regulations is unlawful and a nuisance. Ouray Police Officers may issue warning notices or a summons to anyone in violation of the regulations.

The City of Ouray contracts with Waste Management for trash and recycling collection. Residential trash and recycling collection in the City occurs on Wednesdays, except after Waste Management’s observed holidays. Waste Management requests that trash and recycling are placed outside for collection no later than 7am.
