ISO Rating

Here is the Public Protection Classification Summary Report your insurance company may need.

Haven't heard yet? ISO, or Insurance Services Office, is a for-profit organization that provides statistical information on risk. This risk is assigned a rating between 1 and 10, one being the best. This rating is called a Public Protection Classification or PPC and is then sold to insurance companies. Just about every aspect of a city and a fire department is evaluated in determining the ISO rating.

In 2014, the City, our Fire Department, and our facilities were inspected with the hope of changing our rating. Due to significant improvements we have made with our water system as well as the continued work and training of our Fire Department, we have improved our rating from a 7 to a 4, which is a substantial improvement. In 2023 we have improved from a 4 to a 3.

Some insurance companies have discontinued purchasing ISO data to calculate their rates and instead use the actual loss within a zip code called a subzone system. If your insurance company happens to be one of those that is using this system, then I am afraid the new ISO will have little to no effect on your premiums.

The Ouray Fire Department Chief recommends you contact your insurance company and let them know of the new rating along with the Public Protection Classification Summary Report. Your premiums will not change automatically. Please do not have your insurance company call the fire department; the phones are not manned and there will be no timely reply for insurance calls. Instead, direct them to this information on the City's website.
