For Immediate Release: Chief Placed on Administrative Leave

OURAY, CO | 1:00 PM | The City of Ouray’s Police Chief, Jeff Wood, was placed on paid administrative leave on Monday, January 29, 2024. This administrative leave is pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings of the alleged rape involving the Chief’s stepson at the Chief’s personal residence. Sergeant Gary Ray has taken the role of Acting Police Chief. The Police Chief has been placed on paid administrative leave to preserve public trust in the police department while the criminal proceedings are ongoing. The City of Ouray is not aware of any criminal investigation of the Police Chief and there is no current personnel investigation taking place of the Chief or any member of the Ouray Police Department. No additional information will be provided by the City at this time.

The City has been monitoring the developing case since July of 2023, which is when Police Chief Wood was made aware of the investigation and immediately reported it to the City Administrator.

PRESS RELEASE: For Immediate Release
RE: Plaindealer Article - “Girl: Rapes occurred at chief’s house”

Due to the Police Chief’s residence being involved in this reported incident, the City has been monitoring the developing case since it was first reported in May of 2023. The investigating agency is the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Ouray Police Department has not been involved in the investigation and limited information has been released by CBI. The City will continue to monitor the released information and provide the support necessary as this case moves through the justice system. Currently, no personnel investigations are being conducted in the Ouray Police Department regarding this case.
